When the townspeople arrive at the indicated location, they discover a chest with a note announcing that the treasure is hidden inside. It was a distraction to escape. The citizens they ignore the note, and they continue searching for the treasure. Once they realize they've dug too deep, they wonder: how do we get out now? And the solution that Homer proposed was: "Well, digging."
