Product launch events are commonplace now, but at the time, Gates&#039; unveiling of the new software was described as &quot;the most elaborate product introduction ever seen&quot; and was unique in the industry. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>The original Microsoft Windows software cost $99 and came with a notepad, calendar, clock, card file, terminal application, file manager, a Reversi game, Windows Write, and Windows Paint. Switching between programs took 15 seconds on the average computer of the time, according to a popular software test. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>Microsoft faced several setbacks in completing development, and Windows wouldn&#039;t be available for purchase until 1985. It wouldn&#039;t be until 1987 that Microsoft surpassed Lotus as the largest software producer.
