The gold standard and the Bretton Woods system<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The gold standard had been the cornerstone of the global monetary system since the late 19th century. Under this system, national currencies were backed by gold reserves, providing stability and confidence. However, World War I and the Great Depression severely disrupted this system. During the 1930s, many countries abandoned the gold standard due to the need to issue more money to cope with economic crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
